The tortoise's journey
Essay on social movements from 2012 to 2021. Just as in the fable where the tortoise beats the hare in a race, justice in Mexico will be slow but relentless. The legacy of the 1968 student movement has been an ongoing struggle to build a more just, democratic, and free country. Such demands go beyond the political projects of a six-year term and are nourished by the collective memory that refuses to forget the crimes of the past. Through aesthetics and affection, those who demonstrate convey both their hope for a better world and their indignation at the violence that the country is undergoing. The war against drug trafficking that began in 2006 continues to this day leaving an open wound in society; the death toll from this conflict is 350,000 and the number of missing persons is more than 100,000.
This documentary project began during the 2012 presidential elections with my participation in the student movement #YoSoy132 against the return of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) to the presidency of Mexico. It continued during the following years following closely other social movements, in particular the one that was triggered after the forced disappearance of the 43 students of Ayotzinapa.
